Vitalethine and its prolipherative tetramer, vitaletheine V4, both increase the production of red blood cells from their BFUE and CFUE progenitor cells. Vitaletheine V4 increase production of red blood cells at all concentrations tested (not shown), whereas vitalethine tends to have little effect or even suppresses the production of RBCs at certain concentrations. Suppression of CFUE populations in the 100 fg/ml to 1 pg/ml range suggests that changing concentrations in vitaletheine modulators can switch production (proliferation) of particular cell types on and off. Proliferation, say for replacement of damaged cells, is not a bad thing if controlled.
