The potential for elements, other than those already discussed, to be toxic was graphically illustrated by the Erin Brochovich story, and is shown in linear relationships between oxidation states and the abilities of elements to bind up and poison sulfur biochemistry. The toxic material in Erin's story was hexavalent chromium (Cr+6 or VI). Stainless steel typically contains nickel, cobalt, and chromium, all of which can oxidize, and all of which are implicated in cancer or other serious “dys”eases. Stainless steels often are not stable in chlorinated water (ISCO Tables). Note that haphazard reduction of metal toxins is not a solution. Plus (I) is often more toxic.
