Sesamin's increase in gamma-tocopherol in the blood was 900 in response to sesamin compared to the next higher artificial preservative, BHT (153).. The next highest natural antioxidant was (+)-catechin at 119, but at least one form of catechin has been listed by the USDA database as being carcinogenic, and it was the alpha- not gamma-tocopherol that was increased by (+)-catechin. In stark contrast, sesame seed oil, containing sesamin that increases instead of decreases gamma-tocopherol, reportedly decreases the risk of breast cancer by 50% in chinese women who “cook” with it. Alkylresorcinols may be the next best antioxidant source that mimics, albeit slightly at 65, the phenomenal increase in gamma-tocopherol in response to sesamin.
